After hitting the highlights of Buenos Aires, head down to El Calafate, base for exploring Los Glaciares National Park and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The surrounding stark landscape of the Patagonian steppe is dotted with pristine turquoise lakes created from glacial run-off. Also make your way to Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park. You will find yourself at the very southern tip of South America, where the line between land and see seems a little undefined. Navigating the trails and waterways of this region will imbue you with the significance of this little corner of the continent. This satisfying itinerary will whet your palette for return trips and uncovering more of the gems of fabled Patagonia.

  • Day 1: Buenos Aires

    Upon landing in Buenos Aires our city host will meet you and bring you to your hotel in the Palermo Soho neighborhood.  Your host will be your local contact while you are in Buenos Aires and can answer questions, offer tips about places to see and restaurants to try, and also arrange additional activities as you desire.

    You will have the rest of the day at leisure to enjoy this vibrant city, so you can explore the historic neighborhoods, enjoy the café culture of Buenos Aires, and recover from your overnight flight.

  • Day 2: Buenos Aires City Tour & Tango Show

    In the morning, your host will pick you up from your hotel to enjoy a half-day city tour that hits all the spots of significance in Buenos Aires. Visit the historical and political center of the city, charming San Telmo with its cobblestone streets, and colorful La Boca where tango is ever-present. Also stroll through the chic and aristocratic Recoleta neighborhood, where the regal homes are reminiscent of the city's glory days. Your guide won't let you miss the highlights, but will be flexible to adjust plans based on your curiosity and interests.

    In the evening you will be picked up from your hotel for a night out at one of Buenos Aires’ most emblematic cultural highlights -- a tango show offering a spectacular demonstration of the finest local dancing. The dinner theater also includes your choice of Argentine cuisine and all the malbec you’d like. At the end of the evening you will be driven back to your hotel.

  • Day 3: Flight to El Calafate

    Transfer to the domestic airport this morning for your flight south to El Calafate, the gateway to Patagonia. On landing you will immediately notice the difference in climate and landscape. The town sits on the dry, dramatic Patagonian steppe, on the shore of Lago Argentina, Argentina's biggest lake. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. You will have the evening to explore this frontier-like town with many shops and restaurants. It stays light late in the southern summer, so you may also have time to make the 1 km hike out to Laguna Nimez to catch the beautiful Patagonian sunset.

  • Day 4: Perito Moreno Glacier

    El Calafate sits at the edge of the Patagonian Continental Ice-cap, which stretches for 560 miles and contains the third largest glacier in the world (after Antarctica and Greenland). Set out on a full day excursion today to this stunning ice field: Perito Moreno Glacier. Revel in multiple perspectives on the glacier's face as you meander the well-positioned walkways that allow you the perfect vantage point to watch, and hear, giant chunks of ice plummet into the waters of Lago Argentino. Your guide will answer questions about the glacier and the park. Also included are a nautical safari to see the 300-foot walls of the north face up close and a mini-trek on the glacier itself.

  • Day 5: El Calafate

    Today is open for you to enjoy any of the optional tours around El Calafate. We suggest a visit to Estancia Cristina, a bike ride out to the lake, or a boat cruise to explore some of the more remote glaciers in the region. Talk to us about your interests and we can help you make plans in advance. Or, play it by ear, and let your spirit guide you on arrival.

  • Day 6: Flight to Ushuaia

    Make the most of the morning in El Calafate, fitting in any last sites you want to explore.  At the appropriate time, you will be transferred to the Calafate airport in for your flight to Ushuaia. In the southern end of Argentina, on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, lies Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Located on the Beagle Channel with  an impressive vista of sea, forests, lakes, and mountains, Ushuaia is a picturesque city that offers unexplored, untouched territories that invite visitors to discovery and adventure. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to visit the Prisoners Museum this afternoon to learn about this outpost region's history (not included).

  • Day 7: Tierra del Fuego

    Today you explore Tierra del Fuego National Park. The full day excursion around the park includes an easy trek and a canoeing expedition. A short drive from your hotel brings you to the park, where you start a 7-km trek of about 3 1/2 hours to a wonderful scenic point overlooking Lake Roca, Lagunas Verde and Negra, Rivers Ovando and Lapataia, and Bahía Lapataia. Hiking through this beech forest you will be able to look for the Magellanic woodpecker (the largest in South America), Austral parakeets, black-chested buzzard eagles, and Andean condors. You may also discover artifacts of the Yamanas, the ancient inhabitants of the area. Enjoy a fun outdoor lunch on Lake Roca. Spend the afternoon paddling in the National Park. You will be outfitted with equipment and embark on sturdy inflatable canoes with instructions from your experienced guide in Lago Roca. Paddle the Ovando River, which flows into the Green Lake, offering one of the most beautiful views of the Park. Upon landing in Lapataia Bay,on the Beagle Channel.

  • Day 8: Ushuaia / Beagle Channel / Buenos Aires / Onward

    From the Ushuaia pier you will take a boat cruise along the famous Beagle Channel. Soak in panoramic vistas of Ushuaia Bay and see diverse marine wildlife, such as cormorants and fur seals, on De los Lobos and De los Pajaros Islands. On one of the Bridges Isles, you can explore the island for concheros, or giant shells, and enjoy views of both Chile and Argentina. You will also see the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse.

    If your flight schedule allows, we highly recommend the Magellanic Penguin rookery tour (not included) on Martillo Island in the Beagle Channel where you will be able to walk with the penguins. This excursion is only available from October to April.

    After your day on the water, head to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires and beyond. You may connect to your flight back to the US tonight, or choose to spend another day or two in Buenos Aires. If your calendar allows, consider extending your trip to see the magnificent Iguazu Falls. This network of waterfalls sits between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, and astounds visitors with its volume and beauty. Including this in your itinerary will add 3 nights, well worth it.

Challenging Parts of trip will involve physical challenge. Daily hiking in rough terrain, high altitude, rough road travel and remoteness from modern medical care may be unavoidable circumstances. 4. Demanding Extended foot travel in very remote areas. Previous wilderness travel experience advisable. Doctor's certification may be requested.

Included in costs: Meals as noted, each night in double occupancy accommodations, land transfers between components, English speaking guides, park or site entry fees, surface transport, equipment other than personal gear, government tax, airport transfer assistance, in-country ticket reconfirmation and check-in assistance (where permitted), complete pre-departure packet, toll-free pre-departure phone assistance.

Not included in costs: Meals not noted as included, gratuities, beverages (except tea or coffee at meals), international or domestic airfare unless specified, airport departure taxes not included with air tickets, visas, itinerary changes after confirmation, any services not included in itinerary, any costs incurred due to canceled or delayed flights, acts of nature or other happenings beyond our control, or other costs as are more fully described in JOURNEYS Terms & Conditions.

Deposit and payment schedule: $500 per person per trip or the applicable amount based on the trip and the proximity of the departure date. A second deposit of $800 per person is due four months prior to departure, and final payment for land arrangements is due 60 days prior to departure.  Any applicable permit fees required in advance are non-refundable as well.  Airlines require full payment when tickets are issued. The deposit may be made by Visa, Master Card, American Express, or check, and the Reservation Form may be submitted by fax, mail, or via our website. Full payment schedule and cancellation penalties are described in our Terms and Conditions as noted in our Global Expedition Catalog, on our website, and elsewhere. Please request these if you do not have them before advancing a deposit.

Air fares: JOURNEYS can make complete air arrangements applicable to your trip as noted in this itinerary. If you wish to redeem frequent flyer mileage or arrange flights directly with the airline, you may do so on your own at no penalty. If you do, please consult with us on exact arrival and departure dates and times before having your tickets issued to avoid errors.

Insurance: When you make your application, we strongly recommend the purchase of comprehensive travel insurance in case of emergency situations. Please contact us for a recommended policy.

Itinerary Change Fee: There will be a $40 fee for changes once an itinerary has been confirmed and approved. Additional cancellation penalties or change fees may apply as per our terms and conditions. The passenger is responsible for such fees.
