Ürümqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China. Historically a stop on the Silk Road, today the city is a bustling commercial and transportation center with the highest population of any city in Central Asia. Ürümqi claims to be the “most inland city in the world” i.e. the city furthest from any ocean or sea.
A significant minority of Ürümqi residents are part of the Muslim Uyghur ethnic group and there are occasional tensions and demonstrations against the national government. There is significant police and military presence in Ürümqi, and internet access, international phone calls, and other forms of communications are sometimes restricted.
